Text Box: Holidays conjure happy photos, indulgent feasts and unknown adventures. However, what we tend to recount about trips past are the horror stories; food poisoning scares (why did trying roasted insects on toast seem like such a good idea at the time?), passports or visa stresses and meeting shady characters you were sure you had seen on ‘Australia’s Most Wanted.’

As Murphy’s Law warns, whatever can go wrong will go wrong - and holidays are no exception. At the best of times, holidays are a mix of bittersweet memories. A honeymoon has the added pressure of fulfilling romantic expectations, placing anxieties on the newlywed couple.

The good news? While you can’t control disasters along the way, a few minutes of mapping out the basics of your holiday plan may prevent countless hours of headache. Follow ACT Wedding’s honeymoon guide, as well as our travel-savvy tricks and you’ll be en route to a honeymoon to remember.

How to… choose the right destination
While an action-packed holiday may seem appealing to outdoor types, don’t forget to work some downtime into your trip. The key is to create a balance; you want to leave the honeymoon feeling rested and revived, not weary and spent. Aim to allocate time for enjoying each other’s company, without the weight of schedules or time constraints. Trips which enable personal space and anonymity might be just what you’ll need after all that wedding stress. While it might be tempting to involve friends or family in your trip, keep in mind this will reduce your private time as a couple.

To make sure you land somewhere that you're guaranteed to love, make a list of the answers to these questions:

What do I enjoy doing?
What do I want from this holiday?
How long can I go for?
Do I like cold or warm weather?
Do I want to travel or stay in the one place?
What is my budget?

How to … organise your booking
Sign up to airline and travel e-newsletters so you're the first to see good deals.
Make sure you keep an eye out for holiday deals in newspapers, magazines and on TV.
Before you book, remember that off-peak times will be cheaper and also check out what the weather at your destination. Summer travel enables light packing, however sightseeing in sweltering heat is a difficult feat, even for the most avid travellers. Winter travel is usually cheaper, although the season allows less daylight to see the sights.
Try to reserve airline tickets and accommodation well in advance to take advantage of the early bird specials and always compare prices. Often hotels will knock a bit of the price if you book for longer periods.
Pre-book your airport transfer, which will save you stress upon arrival and departure, and in most cases, a hefty taxi fare.

How to … travel safe
Get a map of the area you are planning to visit and mark down your planned destinations.
Email yourself a copy of all the essential information: airline numbers, credit card phone numbers, driving license numbers and your itinerary in case you lose anything. Give photocopies of all these details to a family member or close friend as back-up.
Visit your GP and get all the needed vaccinations.
Arrange any special dietary requirements with your airline/ hotel several weeks in advance.
Travel insurance is a must whether you're travelling six minutes or six hours away. Travel agents can help you with this.
