Text Box: Your date’s been set, church booked, reception venue locked in, but how do you choose a good wedding photographer? How will you know they’ll be the right person/team for the job? You can research online (just as you’re doing now), go to wedding fairs, wade through advertisements, or go by the recommendation of fellow brides. The most important thing to do is to educate yourself, so you can make informed decisions.

Start by giving yourselves plenty of time, as good photographers can get booked out very early on. Browse through the photographers section of ActWeddings.com.au, have a look at their sample work, supply an on-line enquiry form to see if they are available for your wedding date. Next, talk to them and see their work in person. Talk openly to them about your expectations, requirements and needs for the day. Are they happy to work in with a videographer should you have one?

Once you have determined the photographer is talented enough to be entrusted with your wedding photos, suggest a pre-wedding/engagement photo session. (Many wedding photo packages include this service.) This will give you and the groom the opportunity to work with the photographer in a stress free and open environment.

Couples usually get a very good feel of the style & approach of the photographer; are they strong in traditional portraiture or do they shine in photojournalism, or do they have good attributes in both fields. They must be able to relay the story of your wedding day, take the time to capture your radiant looks, beautiful gown, perfect makeup, hair and make you feel relaxed, composed, happy & beautiful in front of the lens.

Wedding Photography can be the single most important investment of your wedding day. In addition to checking your photographer's formal credentials, photography styles, and personal working synergy, there are other alternatives / important factors to consider:

Photographer Talent
Many good photographers aren’t certified or affiliated. Don’t overlook related experience and exceptional talent.

Costs
Some photographers cost more than others, often for a good reason. Understand that photographing your big day is only the beginning & a small portion of the final product. Many days of work, goes into the digital editing, formatting and production of your final wedding photos. The adage "You Get What Your Pay For" has its merits.

Digital / Film
There are disadvantages to both film and digital. It's worth talking this through with your photographer and see which medium they and you prefer.

Liability / Archiving
Some photographers do not release the negatives/digital files until a certain time in the future, unless prior arrangements have been agreed upon. Ask your photographer for additional media recovery packages, and consult their common practices.
